Chapter 17
Gar walked straight to the liquor cabinet in his library. What a hellish night! He poured his best brandy to the rim of the glass and took a healthy sip before retreating to his favorite chair. Heâd desperately wanted to tell Senna he loved her, but couldnât. Not now, not everâ¦unless Brendon gave her up. But why would anyone give up Senna?
The temperature dropped in the room and the hairs on his neck rose. âLeave me alone, Lassier, Iâm in no mood for your company.â
The ghost materialized on the couch. âI know, but you have need of my counsel.â
Gar took a heavy swallow of his drink. âThe day I listen to your counsel will be the day I die.â
âIâll have good advice for you then, as well. However, I have a solution to your current intolerable situation, if youâll indulge me for a few minutes.â
âNothing needs solved. Weâll get Sennaâs record sealed, sheâll marry Brendon, and what will be, will be.â
âYour solution will make everyone quite miserable.â Lassier disappeared and then rematerialized in the chair next to Gar. âSenna would make a wonderful mother. Only she intends to keep her marriage with Brendon unconsummated so his infidelities cannot hurt her.â
Garâs muscles tensed at his words. âI hope sheâs successful. I would not wish her pain for the world.â Unfortunately, he expected Senna would eventually fall for Brendon and live a life of pure misery.
âEven if it means the end of the family line? Which it will, unless you intend to find a more obliging wife.â
âIâll find no wife to suit me now. You might as well face it, Lassier, the Durran line has come to an end.â
Lassier leaned forward. âI fear youâre correct, unless you stop being a fool and marry Senna. A marriage between the two of you would beget many fine offspring.â
Gar closed his eyes and took a long sip of his drink before replying, âIâm not stealing my brotherâs fiance.â
âCommendable, but short-sighted. Your path leads to misery for all three of you. Iâve a better solution.â
âI know Iâll regret asking, but what is it?â
A pleased smiled formed on the ghostâs face. âBring home the perfect woman for Brendon. Heâll fall in love with the girl, leaving you and Senna to marry with both of your overly rigid consciences intact.â
Gar downed the remainder of his drink and slammed the glass onto the side table. âBrendon has already found the perfect woman.â
Lassier shook his head. âFor you. Not for Brendon. He needs a young lady with a nature more in line with his own playful, lascivious spirit.â
Gar threw his hands up in frustration. âAnd where am I supposed to find this enticement?â
With a smile of great satisfaction, he replied. âIâve already found her. You simply need to bring her home.â
